NLP Tip - Teachers Can Assess Their Own Teaching Style

Visual teachers tend to: • Speak and move quickly • Hold their breath when they are tense • Use the black/white board more often than other teachers • Deliver a large amount of content in quick, short sentences and speak rapidly • Be highly concerned with the visual appearance of the work; it must be neat and spelling is very important • Assign a lot of written work • Need eye-to-eye contact when talking to an individual • Dislike fidgeting in the class and is happy when every one sits upright and still Audio teachers tend to: • Avoid visual aids, such as blackboard and overheads • Use speech as their primary method of teaching • Speak in long monologues • Be easily distracted by noise, which means they notice talking in class instantly • Be easily distracted from the main theme when asked a question • Speak rhythmically and enjoy class discussion and students reading aloud • Avoid silent reading Kinesthetic teachers tend to: • Make use of demonstrations, such as using blackboard and overhead • Speak slowly and in longer sentences • Move constantly • Enjoy projects, drama, plays, in which they involve the students • Be more interested in the quality of the work than the appearance of it • Prefer to stand close to students and touch the arm or shoulder when permitted You might now have a better understanding of how you tend to operate in the classroom and you can easily see the students with whom you share your primary sense system. However, the key is to bring yourself to the primary sense system of all your students. After all, if you are a visual and have a class that contains a lot of audios and kinesthetics, you are going to have to bring your teaching over to their method of learning.
