Security has become second nature to people over the years, whether it be your home, car, or personal belongings.
Our computers are no exception to this, as digital thieves are lurking everywhere, and can be almost impossible to detect by the average computer user.
Preventing unauthorized access to your wireless home or business network (Wi-Fi) is an extremely important measure to take, as a hacker doesn't need to know you personally to target you, and they can be in a house or apartment nearby, or even parked in a car on the street.
Wi-Fi hackers have been known to drive around neighborhoods searching for wireless networks in people's homes, gain access through various unlocked doors in a wireless router's configuration, and then have a field day with your information.
In this article, we will go step by step through the different configurations of your wireless router that leave your network vulnerable, and what to change to make your network virtually hacker proof.
Step 1: The first thing that we have to do is login to our router's configuration utility.
To do so, you must first figure out what your gateway's IP address is.
You can do this by going to Start > Run and typing in CMD.
This will open a session of command prompt.
In command prompt, type 'ipconfig' without the quotations, and press enter. If done while connected to your network, this will return several different numbers.
The one we need is listed as "Default Gateway". Take the IP address listed as "Default Gateway" and write it down, or copy it.
If you're not familiar with IP addresses, it is a series of numbers separated by periods like this: 192.168.1.
1 In fact, this particular IP address I just used as an example is the most common gateway, but yours may be listed as something different.
Now, with this IP address copied, open a web browser such as internet explorer or Firefox, and paste or type the IP address exactly as it shows into the address bar and press enter.
This will bring up the login page for your router.
If you know your login details enter them here, if not, you will have to find the manufacturer's User ID and password for your router.
You can find this in the manual that came with the router, or by going to the manufacturer's website and searching for the manual under the router's model number (this can be found on a sticker on the back, side, or bottom of the router.) You can first try common ones like "admin" for the User ID, and "password" for the password, or "admin" for both User ID and password. If these don't work, refer to the manufacturer's manual for the User ID and password. If you set up your own User ID and password and forgot them, or the manufacturer's default User ID and password are not working, if other people in your home have access to the router or it had a previous owner, the default User ID and password may have been changed.
In such a case you can reset them back to the defaults by pressing and holding the reset button on the back of the router for at least 5 seconds. Now you can login using the default User ID and password set by the manufacturer.
Step 2: Change your User ID and password if they are set to the manufacturer's defaults.
If someone gains access to your wireless network, they can easily log into your router's settings and change them to their liking.
Step 3: Change your SSID.
Your SSID is the name that you see for your wireless network when you search for open networks using a Wi-Fi enabled device.
If the SSID is set to the manufacturer's default, anyone searching for an open network nearby can see yours, and with a little searching on the internet they can figure out the model number of your router which will help them gain access to your router's settings.
Step 4: Disable broadcasting of your SSID. Broadcasting of an SSID is simply how when you search for open networks in an area, the names of open networks will show on your device. If you disable broadcasting of your SSID, when people search for open networks, yours will not even show up, so essentially, they will not know your wireless network even exists.
You will still be able to connect to your network by typing your SSID into your Wi-Fi enabled devices manually.
Step 5: If available, enable WPA2 encryption.
If WPA2 is not available, enable WPA encryption.
If neither is available and only WEP is available, search your router's manual or website for information on updating your router's firmware.
An update for your router may include support for WPA or WPA2 encryption. If no update is available to your current router, you may consider buying a new router as yours is likely very outdated.
WPA2 encryption is ideal as it is much more secure than WPA and especially WEP.
Step 6: Setup a Pre-Shared Key or PSK or Network Key. Whatever your router calls it, this is the "password" to your network.
This is not to be confused with the password that we changed in step 2 for your router.
Your Pre-Shared Key that you setup should be impossible to guess, and should include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. It is very important to include all of these to make it almost impossible to crack, but don't make it so long that it takes you 5 minutes to enter it into every device.
If it is difficult to remember, you can always look it up whenever you need by logging into your router's settings again.
Step 7: Enable MAC Address Filtering or MAC Address Authentication. This step is optional, and should only be performed if you do not have visitors that use your Wi-Fi, or if the devices that use your Wi-Fi are consistently the same devices.
A MAC Address is basically an ID that every internet or network enabled device has that looks something like this: 00:20:e0:00:41:00. Every device ever created has a unique MAC address so that they can be properly identified on a network as an individual.
Using MAC Address Filtering or Authentication only allows the specific devices that you select to connect to your wireless network.
Any outside devices will not be able to connect because their MAC Address will not be in the list you create of allowable devices.
To add your Wi-Fi enabled devices to access list, you first need to obtain the MAC Address of each device.
For computers and laptops, you can simply go to Start > Run and type 'CMD' without quotation marks.
This will bring up a Command Prompt window.
Then type in 'ipconfig /all' without quotation marks, and press enter.
Something saying "Physical Address" should be listed somewhere near the top. Next to it you will see your computer's MAC Address.
It may be listed with hyphens in between every 2 characters instead of colons like in the example above.
This is okay, just make sure when you enter the MAC Address into the access list that you do it in the format required by your router, so you may need to change all hyphens into colons.
Do this for all computers connecting your wireless network.
For devices such as iPods, iPads, cell phones, etc.
, you will have to search for your device information most likely in the Setup menu (or it may be somewhere else depending on the device).
Here, if it is a Wi-Fi enabled device, you will find the MAC Address.
Do this for all non-computer devices that connect to your wireless network and add them each to your access list.
Don't forget, every time you purchase a new device or someone visits and wants to use your Wi-Fi, you will have to perform this step.
It is important to perform all steps to properly secure your wireless network, except for the optional step #7. There are other security measures that can be implemented, however the above steps are the most important, and most necessary to prevent unauthorized access to your wireless network.
If you completed all of the steps listed in this tutorial, you can feel confident that your wireless network is now virtually impenetrable.

Television and Your Preschooler
The incredible technological advancement from an absence of airplanes in 1902 to landing on the moon in such a short time has led many parents, and particularly grandparents (who still remember the moon landing), to believe that technology will educate our children.
Please do not fall into this trap.
Remember that all the brilliant minds that created this wonderful world we live in today had none of today's technology.
In fact, their work led to its creation! There were no computers to do flight simulations for the Wright brothers; they did their research the hard way: by building a wind tunnel to test their wing designs. Einstein spent decades developing his theories, and he never watched television once during that time. He understood the value of developing the imagination when he said, "If you want your children to be brilliant, read them fairy tales.
If you want them to be geniuses, read them more fairy tales." The worst thing you can do is to let your small child watch television for any length of time.
Health and behavior issues are among a number of reasons for this.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recommended that children younger than two not watch television at all and that children older than two should watch no more than two hours of television daily. A major study in the United Kingdom reports that young children who watch more than two hours of television a day nearly double their risk of developing asthma by the time they are teenagers. Many parents believe that learning will occur by just presenting their children educational programs.
Although children do gain some knowledge through watching educational programs on television, the benefits are limited without some sort of interaction.
(The best method of interaction is you interacting with your child). Educational computer games that require interaction are a much better option than television programs. Still, computer games cannot take the place of you, the parents, in stimulating development through such interaction as the following: Reading colorfully illustrated fairy tales to your child Encouraging your child to ask questions about the fairy tales Asking your child questions about the fairy tales Answering these questions at a level of communication that your child understands Your personal computer, not television is your most valuable piece of modern technology.
With the Internet, you can access some of the best educational material available.
This material is not only of the highest quality, it is in most cases free for non-commercial use.
Conclusion Do not rely on technology to educate your child, but use it for repetition in your child's developmentafter you first teach your child a specific skill.
For example, use computer spelling or math programs to help your child practice adding and subtracting numbers only after you first teach your child about phonemes or how to add and subtract. Also, be careful when and how you introduce technology. Children do not develop at the same pace, so do not force any aspect of development.
If you try to force your child into activities for which he or she is not ready, you will lose the fun aspect of the development and your efforts will be counterproductive.

Keep Your Kids Safe on Trampolines
In today's hyper media state, where every day we see kids kidnapped and worse, parents would, perhaps understandably, would rather keep their kids in their back garden when they are outside.
This is partly the reason why trampolines are becoming a large feature, both figuratively and literally, in our back gardens.
Although it is occasionally an eyesore if picked poorly, they do provide parents with an opportunity to keep a closer eye on their children when they are out playing. Trampolines however are quite dangerous in their own right and there are 100s of hospital admissions every year from kids injuring themselves on trampolines.
The very nature of the devices, kids bouncing unnaturally high in the air within close proximity to each other makes accidents almost a dead certainty.
There is however things we can do to not only reduce the accidents, but also when they do happen, make them result in fewer injuries. We want to make them safe, at the same time as still allowing them to be as fun as they are. The first and most obvious 2 are padding and a net.
The padding round the side of the trampoline mat make a slightly safer place for a kid to land, rather than bare springs and a metal frame.
You need to ensure they are good quality pads, to ensure they are capable of protecting your kids. The nets not only may catch your children if they accidentally bounce too far, at a very basic level, they also give your children a sense of distance to the edge of the trampoline, which may be less apparent when you are bouncing around.
Other things you can do is ensure that your kids take jewellery, glasses and shoes off and anything else hard that my cause injury in a collision with another kid. It is also a good idea, for young kids at least, for them to be supervised by an adult at all times. Overly elaborate jumping and bouncing should be kept to a minimum.
Although this is half the fun of a trampoline, it should be done in a reasonable manor to avoid injury.

Coloring Craft Fun For Elementary School Age Kids
Elementary school isn't all spelling, reading, and arithmetic.
If you only teach young kids these sorts of things they will be remarkably bored at school.
Even the most studious of children will start to hate learning if it is not broken up with something much more interesting and creative.
Your job as a teacher or a parent is to teach critical skills and information to the young students, but it is also to make learning fun. The best way to do this is to get the students involved in some fun, creative products.
If you find that your kids are getting bored and looking at you with long faces, consider some fun coloring crafts.
This might seem little juvenile for the older students, but you will be surprised to see what you can do with little more than some paper, coloring books, and colored pencils or markers.
Described below are some of my favorite coloring crafts for elementary school kids.
Give one a try-I promise that you will enjoy the results. 1. Coloring a house or building.
Assign the class to make a house or building out of paper. Provide a cardboard box for the main structure. It will be the job of each student or a group of students to design the different sides and architectural features of the building.
Once they have drawn their parts and cut them out, have them color each part in whatever fashion they choose. Finally, assemble the house. You will get a funky and unique home with all sorts of cool colors. 2.
Coloring the teacher's clothes.
Most kids love to make fun of their teacher.
If you are a teacher or parent who is willing to let the class have a good time at your expense, consider the following activity. The kids need to draw a full sized suit of clothes. Each child gets some part of the clothing to design and color.
When they are finished with the coloring the class needs to cut out the clothing. Teacher then pins the clothing onto their real clothing and walks around the classroom. This one should produce laughter and excitement very quickly. 3.

I have found that children have a natural understanding of the connection between music and colors.
They know that red means anger or passion, that green means life, and that blue means contemplation.

Provide each child with a separate work to color and a picture of the original.

SAT Reading Passages: Is There a Trick?
Reading Better for the SAT
When teaching reading comprehension for the SAT, I noticed that many of my students had developed some very bad habits:
1) Many don't read the title of the passage;
2) Many read only the first or second sentence in each paragraph;
3) Some read the questions first and stop reading the passage when they feel they've found an answer to one of the questions;
4) Some get discouraged and just begin answering questions without even reading the passages because they are intimidated by their length.
Although there are students who will do very well by previewing the questions or reading only parts of the paragraphs, most students do not.
I think it's important for students to understand the acronym, PQ3R. Students have said, 'This means preview the questions, then read, recite and review.
' Actually, this means, preview the passage, make a mental note of the basic types of questions, thoroughly read the passage, mentally recite important themes, and review the headings and topic sentences.
PQ3R is not a trick that allows us to skip the reading... it's a reading strategy. Another acronym I think students should remember is DIME. Yes, this is a very old-fashioned reading strategy, but one that I've used for over 25 years in education.
It stands for Details, Inferences, Main Ideas and Evaluation.
Obviously, the two easiest types of SAT reading questions are Main Idea questions and Detail questions.
The main idea of the passage (non-fiction) is often contained in the title and in the first paragraph, so most students do well on these questions - That's why reading the title is important, it establishes a direction for the content.
Detail questions are also easy because they demand information that is specifically stated in the passage. Inferences and Evaluation questions are much more difficult. Inference questions require students to analyze the passage and develop a logical conclusion or a prediction involving a process or a result not explicitly stated in the passage.
For example, can a student read a passage about a person's religious views and predict how he or she will vote in an election? Evaluation questions require similar analytical skills but for a different purpose. Who is the intended audience of this passage, and what is the author's purpose? How well did the author achieve her purpose? What might the author's feeling be on other similar or even dissimilar issues? Does the passage give you enough information to determine the author's politics, for example? Clearly, a quick reading of the passage will not help a student answer these questions.
That's why it is important for the students to read the title and read the entire passage in order to develop an understanding of the author's purpose and audience. Further, with a complete reading, main idea and detail questions are easy to answer. The only real trick to success on the reading passage section of the SAT is practice reading the kind of passages that will be on the SAT. Buy a practice book, pour yourself some ice tea, and start reading!

How well did the author achieve her purpose? What might the author's feeling be on other similar or even dissimilar issues? Does the passage give you enough information to determine the author's politics, for example? Clearly, a quick reading of the passage will not help a student answer these questions.
That's why it is important for the students to read the title and read the entire passage in order to develop an understanding of the author's purpose and audience. Further, with a complete reading, main idea and detail questions are easy to answer. The only real trick to success on the reading passage section of the SAT is practice reading the kind of passages that will be on the SAT.
